Batavia is modern day Djakarta. Johore is in the Southern part of Malaya. Makasar Strait is in Indonesia, East of Borneo.

The Japanese progress in Malaya has slowed down considerably and US counter-attack in the Makaser Straits, where several Japanese convoy ships were sunk, is proving effective. The news from Libya is not so good for the British who are now being pushed back by the Rommel forces. Churchill described the General as a skilful and daring leader, a great General. The speeches in the House of Commons in London frequently refers to the Indian problem, and any settlement here which a member may ask for is solely with a view to getting more out of this country for their war than in justice of Indian claims to Independence. It is said that the Commons would express confidence in the Prime Minister, who will, however, have to take note of the largely prevailing feeling of dissatisfaction against some of his Cabinet colleagues. The Russians are pursuing the retreating Germans and have scored more successes around Moscow.
